Did You Change Your Batteries and Filters?

Happy March, everyone. The winter here has been rough and it is likely that your furnace has been moving large amounts of air through your home the last few months. It is extremely important to change your filters regularly in order to keep the air in your home safe and healthy.

Clogged filters can also cause a reduction in airflow, meaning it will take longer to heat your home. There’s a chance with a clogged filter, that some rooms in your home may not receive any heat.

But there are other things in your home that need checking this month. Do you have working smoke alarms? Daylight Savings Time has come and gone. Did you remember to change the batteries in your smoke detectors when you changed your clocks? A home fire impacts the life of an American family every 85 seconds. By providing an early warning and critical extra seconds to escape, smoke alarms cut your family’s risk of dying in a home fire in half – but only if they work.

Local fire departments want to remind you that when you turn your clocks back on Sunday, March 9 at 2:00 am, make a life-saving change in your household – change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. This simple habit takes just a moment, but is the best defense your family has against the devastating effects of a home fire. The life expectancy of a carbon monoxide detector is 5 to 7 years. So it’s a little shorter than a smoke detector, which we average right around 10 years.

If you have questions about how to change your filters, or you need a carbon monoxide detector, call All Seasons Heating and Cooling, so we can help you not only be comfortable in your home, but also safe.

  5. Filters do need to be changed often. That is the first mistake that new homeowners or renters often make. This will raise the bill.

  6. My always forgets to change the filters. It's also amazing how he ranks so much up in bills for heating and cooling his house. Then he ends up complaining all the time. This article was great and answered a lot of questions I was having about batteries and filters. Now I need to tell my dad this information.

  7. That is some really brilliant advice about alarm systems and home heating. I have never thought to make checks and updates as often as daylight savings time. I usually let the home heating wait to be cleaned every summer.

  9. My house has been getting really cold at night and I fear it will get worse once fall hits. My heater is broken and I don't know how to fix it. I hope I can have someone come repair it. http://www.comfortsolutionsutah.com/heating/

  10. My heater is broken as well but fortunately we don't need it in the summer. But when winter hits we'll be desperate. Haven't found the problem yet, looking for the easiest way to fix or replace it. http://www.theenergyexperts.com/oil-heat-service-plan.php

  11. Thanks for the tips. I agree that a clogged filter will take a longer amount of time to heat up your home. I will have to make sure that the filter is clean and does not get clogged. I just want to be warm in my own home this winter.

  12. Our heater is not working as good as it used to. It has not been keeping our home as warm. I have no idea what causes it to not work as well. My first thought was could it be the filter. So I am researching if that could be the reason, then try it out to see if it works.

  13. This is great advice, and I always try to do preventative maintenance when it comes to my heating and air. I do replace my filters when I should and I have been making sure that my heater is in tip top shape. My brother on the other hand, never does anything like that and he has been needing maintenance. I have tried to help him, but he just doesn't take care of his stuff like I do. He has a professional that is coming to the house and fixing the heater.

  16. Lorna, what do you mean when you mentioned that furnaces should be changed at a regular interval? This is my question after reading your comment and it also has me thinking about my own furnace. Well, I recently bought my house from a neighbor. It seems like the furnace that they had was pretty old and somewhat beat up that it has me thinking of changing it or even updating it.

  20. In hot climates, plant shade trees around the house. Don’t plant trees on the South if you want to benefit from passive solar heating in the winter.
